Easy homemade Chai Tea Concentrate with black tea and warm spices, perfect for hot or iced drinks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups water

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 6 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed

  • 6 whole cloves

  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns

  • 1 piece fresh ginger, about 2 inches, sliced

  • 4 black tea bags, Assam or English breakfast

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar or honey, adjust to taste

  • Milk or water, for serving

Instructions

  • Bring the water to a boil in a medium saucepan.

  • Add the cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, cloves, black peppercorns, and sliced ginger.

  • Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 20 minutes.

  • Turn off the heat and add the black tea bags.

  • Steep the tea bags for 5 minutes only.

  • Remove the tea bags and strain out the spices using a fine-mesh strainer.

  • Stir in the brown sugar or honey while the mixture is still warm, until fully dissolved.

  • Let the Chai Tea Concentrate cool completely.

  • Transfer it to an airtight jar and refrigerate.

  • To serve, mix with milk or water to taste, hot or cold.

Notes

  • Steep the tea bags for only 5 minutes so the Chai Tea Concentrate stays smooth and not bitter.
  • Mix equal parts concentrate and milk for a classic creamy chai.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Stir before serving if any spice settles at the bottom.
